A World Where Everyone Has A Decent Place To Live
At Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity, we see a Dallas where every neighborhood is proud and we are proud of every neighborhood. To move us closer to this reality, we need to understand how homeownership fits into the picture of the Dallas we want to build.
Our Mission
Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity builds strength, stability and self-reliance through affordable homeownership for individuals and families.
With declining rates of homeownership and a lack of homes that people can afford, revitalizing our neighborhoods and increasing access to homeownership is more important than ever in bringing back lost purchasing power, tax base, and associated neighborhood stability.
More than a roof, homeownership is a catalyst for transforming our communities, building financial stability for generations, increasing educational success, and priming the neighborhood for economic development.
As part of our mission, Dallas Habitat is building homeowner equity and asset wealth, addressing the affordable housing gap, strengthening neighborhoods and improving health and education for children and families. Dallas Habitat is working collaboratively on a vision for new policies and products that will create a better value proposition for our community and homeowners.
What We Do
Dallas Habitat transforms families, revitalizes neighborhoods, and builds a better Dallas through affordable homeownership, financial empowerment, advocacy, and the construction of homes people can afford. By strategically bringing together public and private funding, community leadership and vision, and thousands of volunteers—we will break the cycle of poverty and transform our communities.
Who We Serve
We serve families and individuals in the Dallas community seeking stable and affordable housing. We focus on families between 50% and 120% of the area median income. Our goal is to provide these families with the tools and resources needed to buy and maintain their homes, fostering a sense of community and stability for future generations. Through our work, we aim to create lasting change and improve the quality of life for those we serve.
How It Works
Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity helps families achieve homeownership through various supportive services, including our Homeownership Counseling program. Through our no-cost homeownership education online courses, we cover essential topics like budgeting, credit scores, identity theft prevention, and foreclosure prevention. Our individual counseling sessions assess families’ financial situations and readiness for homeownership, incorporating HUD-certified programming to guide them toward success.
To address significant barriers like high interest rates and down payment challenges, we provide qualified families the opportunity to apply for a zero-percent interest mortgage and receive up to $10,000 in down payment assistance. This approach ensures mortgage payments remain at 30% or less of a family’s monthly income, enabling them to build home equity immediately while providing an average cost benefit of $145,000 over the life of the mortgage.
Moreover, Dallas Habitat homebuyers partner with us to build their homes and those of their neighbors. By utilizing volunteer labor and donations, Dallas Habitat can sell homes at no profit while providing homeowners with affordable monthly mortgage payments through our mortgage product.
Our comprehensive support empowers families to escape low-asset poverty and ensures they have the skills needed for long-term success in homeownership.
